Bembridge

Brittan Norman, makers of Islander situated there. Hard runway (837m x 23m). Watch for gliders. It was a great trip to the Isle of Wight. Propeller Inn offers nice meals. If you take a taxi to Bembridge village try crab cakes in The Crab and the Lobster pub located on the coast. I believe airfield is currently closed to visitors due to dispute with landowner (as of 11/00). Dispute has been resolved now (as of 09/01) but make sure you phone first before hopping in.

Big airfield with a big hard runway (1965m x 46m) and a few grass ones. Landing fee is £14. Marshall Aerospace located there so plenty of Hercules and other military transport aeroplanes could be seen. This airfield was a part of my solo navigation exam and it all went well.

The most expensive landing fee so far, £50 for landing including airport transfer fee for 4 people (the first and the last transfer fee I have paid while flying Cessna 172)!!! We "transferred" from apron to the cafe and back to apron. It looks like they are trying to get rid of GA due to an increase in airliner traffic. Great moment, while at the take off holding point, watching a middle sized airliner jet landing  just in front of us. Hard runway (2354m x 46m).

Duxford

Great airfield with lots of old and rare aeroplanes and the museum. Main hard runway (1503m x 44m). It is possible to fly-in at any of the season airshows (about 4 major ones each year) and is highly recommended. At Spring 2001 Airshow there were more than 80 planes that had flown-in including our C-172 G-BHVR. It is a strange feeling to perform a landing in front of several thousands of people just before an air display. See you there next year!Since 2001 Duxford is host to a static Blackbird SR-71 aeroplane (the only one in a museum outside USA) which is stored in Hangar 1 together with 2nd test Concorde and Vulcan!!!! - if only my back garden was big enough!

This is my home airfield. Hard runway (656m x 30m). Great food, very busy over the weekends, take care when taxiing (narrow taxiways), well worth a visit. Easily identifiable being located just next to two reservoirs. Phone in for joining procedures and (variable) circuits briefing.

Probably the widest airfield in UK (2450m X 91m) it was a testing ground for Concorde. If landing on Rwy 09 make sure you land on the last half (or third) of the runway, otherwise it is a 2 Km taxi to the GA stand which is next to the threshold of Rwy 27. Limited restaurant facilities over the weekend, but very nice cafe just outside the airfield. Make sure you don't get locked out of airfield. BAE is located on aerodrome, and on the day of the visit we missed a couple of inbound Airbuses by a couple of hours. Maybe next time. Landing fee £17.

A very bumpy grass runway (884m x 40m) and limited restaurant facilities. Very close to Bembridge ATZ. Beautiful scenery to fly around and a perfect place for a day out, being a walkable distance to Sandown and Shanklin villages. Both have good sandy beaches. Along the coast there are nice walking routes with breathtaking scenery. One area particularly nice to fly over is The Needles, which is something special.

On the Kent coast near Dungeness nuclear power station. Last (hard) runway (1504m x 37m) before France, landing fee £15. Organised flights to Le Touquet. On their website there is a nice feature: a real time moving web camera with controls, handy for checking the weather or checking up on your flying friends drinking in the Biggles Bar. Restaurant had a carvery on our visit (Sunday).

Huge runway (2752m X 61m), lovely scenery, must be the best value for money airfield (only £11 for landing). On take off (in C-172) by the time we reached the end of runway we were over 1000 ft QFE!  Virgin and BA are regularly training with their B-747s there .

I flew into Aerofair 2000 and 2001. These were my only experiences of this airfield and were great fun. Take extra care when joining and in circuit, there are lots of aerobatic aeroplanes about and there was a recent tragedy at the airfield. This goes for normal day visits, not the airshow which is highly regulated and safe, but extremely busy. Main hard runway (1930m x 45m), landing fee is "donations to upkeep".

A nice venue for lunch and unusual aircraft: AN-2s, Tiger Moths, homebuilts, etc. Main grass runway (1110m x 46m), landing fee is £7.50. Airfield is partly inside London Heathrow zone, so exercise caution while flying to or from it.

Handy for visits to Stratford-upon-Avon. Main hard runway (912m x 23m), landing fee £10. Few times a year Vulcan bomber does taxi runs, sometimes with the nose pull-up if the head wind is good. Nice online weather report on the website.
